My Hero Gala 2008 - Monday December 1st -  Tickets Now on Sale!

On Dec. 1 at Guastavinos, we will host our biggest fundraising event of the year, the 2008 My Hero Gala, featuring a silent auction, dinner, awards ceremony and dancing.  Supported by Gala co-chairs Alejandro Santo Domingo, Claudia Cisneros and Narciso Rodriguez and Board President Maria Eugenia Maury Aria, AFAI is proud to honor world-renowned fashion photographer Mario Testino with the individual My Hero Award, SAB Miller Group with the corporate My Hero Award and 19-year-old Alejandro Pompei with the Activist Award.  Almost 95 cents of every dollar collected at the gala is used to provide services for people living with HIV and AIDS in Latin America and the Caribbean region and for immigrants in New York City.

December 1st announced as date for My Hero Gala 2008

This year, AID FOR AIDS International (AFAI) will commemorate World AIDS Day by hosting its biggest fundraising event of the year, the “My Hero” Gala.  This year, the Gala will be reborn through a renovated concept, a new venue, and a new ”My Hero” award. (See photo)

In addition, AFAI has set an unprecedented fundraising goal that will represent 40% of the agency’s annual income- One million dollars.  Almost 95 cents of every dollar collected at the gala is used by the agency to provide direct services for people living with HIV and AIDS in Latin America and the Caribbean region, and also for immigrants in New York City.

The team at AFAI is working very hard to make this an amazing event, full of great surprises and inspiring moments that will remain forever in the hearts of our supporters.

Oscar winning documentary: The Blood of Yingzhou District

AFAI Staff members had the opportunity to meet personally with Eliza Petrow, a public health consultant working directly with these children in China. Ms. Petrow sought out AFAI staff at the International AIDS Conference in Mexico earlier this month, to personally thank them for their support and help providing pediatric antiretroviral medication.

Summer of Prevention event with Manuel and Hermes -  Domincan Republic

image Together with AID FOR AIDS, Manuel and Hermes organize a Summer HIV Prevention Program. A young and interactive production with one of the best prevention messages for our children. The event organized by the Youth Program “En Acción con Manuel y Hermes” is destined to contribute to the “culture” of protection and prevention of HIV in the Dominican Republic adolescent population.

NYIAL’S Women’s Group celebrates the Summer

The women’s Spanish-speaking support group will be celebrating the warm weather and taking advantage of their children’s break from school.  More than ten mothers have confirmed their attendance to an outing in Central Park at 10 am on Friday July 18, 2008.

$56,483 raised by Team AID FOR AIDS in AIDS WALK New York 2008

On Sunday, May 18, 45,000 caring individuals raised an incredible $7.06 million at AIDS Walk New York.  Once again almost perfect weather heralded the start of the day with Team AID FOR AIDS setting off early represented by a slightly smaller team than usual of 74 dedicated walkers and some very welcome last minute friends.

NYIAL collaborates with Latin American consulates to provide recent immigrants with services

image As part of its mandate, the NYIAL program at AFA continues to collaborate with foreign consulates in New York City.  During June and July, this initiative expanded and the program secured a Health Day, Dia de la Salud, at several consulates in the City.

AFA launches Observatorio Sobre Mujer y VIH/SIDA for women living with HIV and AIDS in Latin America

Through the Department of Advocacy, AID FOR AIDS is ready to launch Observatorio Sobre Mujer y VIH/SIDA (Observatory for Women Living with HIV/AIDS), a website dedicated to women living with HIV and AIDS, organizations and agencies working with this population, activists, and the like.  The initiative will focus on women living with HIV and AIDS in Latin America and the Caribbean, at both the national and regional levels.  There are very few places in the world that respect the rights of women, especially as they pertain to sexual health and reproduction.

AID FOR AIDS sends El Salvador and Costa Rica more than $50,000 worth of antiretroviral meds

image NEW YORK, NY (JULY 11, 2007): This week AID FOR AIDS continued demonstrating its dedication to improving the quality of life for individuals living with HIV and AIDS in developing countries.  The non-profit organization donated more than 5,700 bottles of antiretroviral medication to the governments of El Salvador and Costa Rica.  This medication, worth more than $50,000 (USD), will be distributed by the National AIDS Program in El Salvador and by the Department of Social Security in Costa Rica.

Donation to Honduras lets Nat’l AIDS Prog. to continue providing antiretroviral treatment

imageThrough a partnership with the Clinton Foundation’s HIV/AIDS Initiative, UTAI is working to reduce the amount of medication that expires while waiting to be distributed.  The newest effort of this global-reaching initiative is a donation of nearly 900 bottles of antiretroviral medication to the National AIDS Program in Honduras.

NYIAL’S Women’s Group celebrates Mother’s Day

image The Women’s Spanish-speaking Support Group celebrated Mother’s Day this year with a lunch at Mary Ann’s Restaurant in Chelsea, New York.  More than 15 mothers attended this event and participated in event activities, organized by the group’s facilitators, Gladys Ochoa and Dinorah Minaya. Participants enjoyed games, exchanged gifts, and relished in the relaxing atmosphere created by their friends and family.
