América Soler-Everhart, the board president of FUNDVEC, recently returned from volunteering at Biblioteca Pública El Páramo in Venezuela and was able to bring back good news about the FUNDVEC library projects that are made possible because of their generous supporters:
Biblioteca Pública El Páramo - continues to be a beacon of hope for a better education and opportunity for poor rural children and parents in Caserío El Páramo (Valle de la Pascua) provides all who come with a large selection of quality books, learning media and a safe, comfortable place to read.
Planting Seeds of Knowledge Bookcase Libraries Project - Rural parents and preschool teachers are praising las pequeñas bibliotecas, or "the little libraries" that provide quality books for hundreds of rural preschool children. Thanks to all who have given special gifts that make age-appropriate books available, which are helping these children acquire essential basic pre-literacy skills that they need to become good readers and successful students!
Friends of Biblioteca Pública El Páramo Association has volunteered to keep the library clean and plans are underway to raise funds needed to help keep the library operating. The community is very excited to be involved, which is a tremendous help as budget constraints have caused FUNDVEC to cut back costs.
FUNDVEC wishes to thank you for your ongoing support on behalf of the thousands of rural citizens whose lives are being enriched by having access to books.

The landscape seems immediately familiar. A few steps to one side or another and we're certain that the view before us will somehow resolve itself and we'll be able to name the place. Wander as we might, the site remains unrecognized--yet the sensation that we already know it never disappears. Art critic Roberto Guevara observed that an encounter with a painting by Venezuelan artist Pancho Quilici was more like traveling than seeing. The vistas that fill the background of a Quilici painting invite exploration. The incomplete buildings, labyrinths, and futuristic, semitransparent geometric forms that dominate their foregrounds encourage it...

...Venezuelan-born Eliana Cuevas will always have strong ties to her homeland, but after 12 years in Toronto, she's fully acclimatized to Canadian life.

The artist whose design may one day grace some of the oil tanks overlooking Portland Harbor is ... Jaime Gili. (His eye-bending Web site is here.)
He’s a dynamic Venezuelan-born painter living in London, who said at the announcement of his win, "I cannot imagine any bigger project," and then moved right on to do just that: "I’d like to see my paintings taking over cities."...
Tina Ramirez, the artistic director of Ballet Hispanico, is stepping down from her position after almost 40 years, but she doesn’t want to call it retirement: "I’ve been in the theater my whole life, how can you retire?"
Tina Ramirez is stepping down as artistic director of Ballet Hispanico. In her almost-40-year tenure she emphasized education.
Ms. Ramirez was dressed in an impeccably tailored black pantsuit and gold lamé sneakers, her ash-colored hair neatly pinned back with sequined clips. She bustled about her company’s Upper West Side office last week as she prepared for the Ballet Hispanico’s season at the Joyce Theater, which began Tuesday night....
