The group was founded in 1970 by Tina Ramirez, who was born in Venezuela to a Mexican bullfighter and a Puerto Rican educator. She moved to the United States at the age of 7 and started to study dance. After touring the world, she became a teacher herself.

"I started teaching in 1963 because my childhood dance instructor, Lola Bravo, decided to retire. While her student, I told her I wanted to teach someday," Ramirez said. "She remembered my remarks and offered me her position. This is how it all started."...
