Gabriela Montero is not your typical classical pianist. She takes requests from the audience and improvises her show.
Venezuelan-born Montero is known for incorporating soap opera themes, pop tunes and nursery rhymes into original works. I wonder how well she'd take to a suggestion of Daft Punk's Da Funk or Lady Gaga's Love Game. That is, if she's up on these pop tunes.
She recently played at U.S. President Barak Obama's inauguration ceremony on Jan. 20. The last time she played in Toronto was November 2007, when she sold out the Glenn Gould Studio...
Gustavo Dudamel, sits in front of me, shaking his boyish curls, and laughing.
For a man with so much resting on his young shoulders, he is remarkably
carefree. The Venezuelan-born newly appointed music director of the Los
Angeles Philharmonic is charismatic and sweet-natured. This 28-year-old is a
salsa-dancing, movie-mad, prodigiously gifted musician whose two favourite
words in English are “delicious” and “beautiful”...
...Speaking of Perdomo, the Venezuelan-born pianist cuts loose in fine fashion on his latest release on the Criss Cross label, “Pathways.” Working in a trio format with bassist Hans Glawischnig and drummer Eric McPherson, Perdomo takes a more straight-ahead route than expected on this outing. And the results are spectacular.
Perdomo, who studied with the late Roland Hanna at Queens College in New York City, displays his melodic sensibilities throughout, notably on originals like “Slap,” “Unexpected” and the aforementioned “Shine.” He’s also well schooled in the standard songbook, with fresh takes on “Speak Low,” “Almost Like Being in Love” and Bud Powell’s “Oblivion,” which closes this superb session in fine style...
...Abdullah and Tshaka, two lions from Zion Wildlife Garden near Whangarei are travelling to Opunake today to take part in a very special art project.
Govett Brewster resident artist Javier Tellez will be letting the lions loose at Everybody's Theatre between 11am and 2pm to watch a film and he's inviting the public along too.
Venezuelan-born Mr Tellez is very quiet about exactly what the lions will be doing but some good sources have told the Taranaki Daily News there will be roaring. Part of a nationwide project called One Day Sculpture, the idea came from the artist's love of movies and movie theatres and his appreciation of wild animals....
...Ballet Hispanico captures the excitement of the nights when dazzling dancers tried to outdo each other from the time the club opened past closing time into the wee hours of the morning. On any given night, only the very best dancers lined up around the block waiting to gain admission and step out to the most sophisticated bands such as Tito Rodriguez and Tito Puente.
Ramirez, born in Venezuela, moved to New York City at an early age. "I always took my little sister to dance class, which really made up my mind to be a dancer, because I knew I would love it. Even before that, I always wanted to be an entertainer, but didn't know where to look, or how to get started," Ramirez says from her Manhattan home...
For Franco de Vita, a man who has spent the past 25 years performing, composing and recording music, albums are sacred.
They’re works of art, products of much love and hard work.
So it’s not surprising to find the Venezuelan singer-songwriter and pianist today with mixed feelings over the adverse effects that the Internet has had on the global recording music industry in recent years.
After all, he - like nearly all singers everywhere - has been directly hit by the radical changes in the music business with the force of a Tomahawk missile....
...Even if you're not in the market for a one-of-a-kind lapis lazuli necklace with an ancient pendant from Afghanistan (but made by a French artist based in Bali), it's worth checking out CoutureLab.com, if only to be inspired by its unusual, innovative fashion and design pieces. (Yes, these exclusive items don't come cheap, but a girl's gotta dream!) The London-based gallery and online shop was launched in 2007 by Carmen Busquets, a Venezuelan-born businesswoman who once owned a boutique in Caracas, and later became a founding investor in Net-a-porter...
