1:00 Feast of San Juan
Dance workshop – taught by Milvia Pacheco (Rastro Dance Company). San Juan is patron saint to
many people on the central Caribbean coast, who celebrate the Saint’s
feast day from June 23 to June 25. Several special dances are a part of
the celebration. After learning the dance steps we’ll have our own
celebration.
2:45 Percussion Workshop
Taught by Roberto Quintero – Learn
the special rhythms and instruments of Venezuela. Bring your drum, if
you have one. (There will be some drums available.)
4:00 Diablo Yare Mask Workshop
Taught by Elisa Hevia. In
July, Venezuela celebrates Corpus Cristi, a holiday going back to sixth
century Spain. The Yare people have modified the celebration with many
elements from their African heritage. These colorful horned animal
“Devil” masks are worn in street processions.
6:00 Eleguá
Venezuelan group that performs the African
rhythms of the Venezuelan central coast, Eleguá is a vocal and
percussion group composed of women who play Venezuelan traditional
music and conduct extensive research to rescue the purest African
musical roots of their music. Eleguá is visiting the United
States as part of the cultural outreach program of the Venezuelan
embassy.

...But among those who have acknowledged their devotion are Angels pitcher
Francisco Rodriguez and Florida Marlins third baseman Miguel Cabrera —
both Venezuelan — and the White Sox's Cuban-born pitcher Jose
Contreras, all of whom have been All-Stars and won World Series rings.
Others, such as Cincinnati Reds shortstop Alex Gonzalez and Chicago
Cubs infielder Ronny Cedeno, have experimented with it...

tizana, frescolita, arepas, caraotas, chicha, platanos, tostones,
queso, y productos criollos son gratamente bienvenidos...
...Andres Levin is clever. Born in Venezuela but now based in the States,
he's a producer, film composer and multi-instrumentalist (credited here
with playing guitars, keyboards, tres, Wurlitzer and accordion, to say
nothing of his vocals and horn arrangements) who has won accolades for
his Fela Kuti tribute, Red Hot + Riot...
...A TV with no screen? Sounds crazy, but Chad Dyner at MIT's MediaLab
thought of it and created the Heliodisplay a couple of years back. Made
by IO2 Technology, the Heliodisplay actually forms floating 2D images
in midair from regular video inputs - essentially a virtual 30-inch
video screen. It's not holography; it works by affecting the properties
of the ambient air above the "projector" (about the size of a desktop
PC turned on its side). While the images can't actually be touched, the
display can respond to the movement of your hand, making it a virtual
touchscree...
...It is likely that the most contemporary works will become the most
discussion-provoking: Venezuelan photographer Alexander Apóstol's
lugubrious 2001 series "Residente Pulido" demonstrates the deleterious
effects of socialism on some once-impressive modernist buildings...
...But to truly fit in, learning English is
a must, said Venezuelan-born catcher Yorvit Torrealba, who arrived in
the United States at age 16 to play pro ball.
"It was very hard. For the first couple of years I had a
mentality that was like, 'I'm just here to do my job, and I don't have
to worry about anybody else,"' Torrealba said. "But my second year, I
was the only Latin player on the club. I'd walk by guys and we wouldn't
even say hello to each other. I was starting to feel like, 'What's
this? Is everybody my enemy or are they my teammates?' It was mostly
because I didn't speak the English. Now, I actually have camaraderie
with the guys. Learning English helped."...

...Another member of the cast, Catalina Kulczar-Marin, has always wanted
to try acting in Spanish. Born in Venezuela to Hungarian parents, and
raised in Florida, the trilingual Kulczar-Marin has been in Charlotte
for 10 years. When she heard about the "Anna" audition via e-mail, she
says, "I was all over it." ...
