Sergio Tiempo, the immensely talented Venezuelan-born pianist, uses his colossal technique to produce a spectrum of colors and dynamic nuance from the piano. His program at the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater on Saturday afternoon included Haydn's delightful Sonata in D, Hob. XVI: 37; Chopin's Sonata No. 3 in B Minor; Ravel's suite "Gaspard de la Nuit"; and the "Consolation" No. 3 and "Mephisto" Waltz No. 1 of Liszt. Still in his mid-30s, Tiempo is nonetheless a seasoned veteran, having made his debut at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw at 14...
...Over at the In-Dependent Gallery, the work of Venezuelan photographer and graphic designer Jojo Corvaia dispelled the notion of race, gender or beauty by shooting his subjects in up close detail. The simplicity of the portraits almost renders them unbelievable, perhaps because we are used to so much manipulation and computer wizardry these days...

"I wasn't particularly interested in being director of a company," says Venezuela-born Javier de Frutos, a disconcertingly short time after taking over the Leeds-based Phoenix Dance Theatre. "As a choreographer," he explains, "I could have gone on working with different companies and pursuing theatre stuff..." (he choreographed the Donmar's revival of the musical Cabaret to great acclaim, and Carousel at Chichester). But then, doesn't being head-honcho at least give him control?...
...Fan participation will be a critical part of The Bolero Project, the forthcoming CD by Venezuelan-born pianist Edward Simon and singer/percussionist Leonardo Granados. In this project, fans will have an opportunity to submit their real-life stories to Simon and Granados, who will carefully go through those submissions and write and record boleros based on the stories they select. The Bolero Project will offer different levels of participation, and individual boleros will be dedicated to fans participating at the higher levels...
...Argenis Brito has remixed Miss Yettis “lovely loneliness” in his own magic
style and his minimal genius-remix and sensual groovy bass structures
carry a special warm deepness that seduce the senses. He has picked up
the hypnotic elements of the original integrating them into his own
unique and enchanting sound and the result is a very deep, beautiful
and groovy journey...
...Here's what about the pitching. The hopes of New York's teams rest on
two powerful arms—one left, one right. The lefty, Johan Santana, age
29, is called, by most observers, the best pitcher in the game. The
right-hander is 22-year-old Joba Chamberlain, who, many observers feel,
has the potential to be the best pitcher in the game...
